tHs Winter Challenge CLOSE

Hi Ladies,
I can’t believe it has been 3 months already and the winter challenge is finally over!! I don’t know about you but I definitely had a good winter. Not only did I take care of my hair but I actually was waking up and going to the gym on these cold winter days! I am quite proud of myself  (p.s regular exercise is great for our hair)
Now before I start to ramble on and on let me get to the post of this post … I need to officially announce the END OF THE 2014 THS WINTER CHALLENGE!!! (Woohoo) and of course explain to you what is next in terms of the competition which is the exciting part right? lol… Many of you might remember from the first post about the challenge but if not here’s what we have to do…

1) Take a length check pic of your hair and all the focus areas that you were working on this winter
2) Post your final pics on the facebook page, send a fb message, twitter or Instagram or send them via email to me by 7th August 2014 with the hashtags #thswinterchallenge #finalpic
3) Wait for the results to be announced to see if you have WON one of the 3 prizes 😀

I’m excited ladies and I really hope you all manage to submit your pics and share your progress with each other through posts and comments on the blog and facebook page.
Oh and in case you may have forgotten here are the possible prizes up for grabs:
• Jamaican Black Castor Oil/ Strong Roots Pimento Oil
• Tropic Isle Deep Conditioner
• Free tHs hair consultation

**Now before I go I have big announcement about MY hair… as you all know I was doing a long term stretch/ transition and I was going to decide what I would do with my hair after a full one year stretch i.e whether to continue with my texlaxed journey or to start a full transition to natural …. Well decision made! I AM GOING NATURAL!!! I am excited and nervous all at once but looking forward to the journey. I will NOT be doing the big chop so I have a tough road ahead managing three textures on my head! I will also not transition only to relax again after 2 month lol. Wish me luck and look out for my posts and pics of my transitioning journey on the blog 😀

Winter Challenge Check in/Feedback Friday

Hi ladies

I can’t believe one month has already gone by …oh how time flies. No complaints from me though, anyone who knows me can confirm how much I dislike the cold.

Now feedback time! How is the winter challenge going? Please let’s update each other, I hope by now we all have our protective styles in and are settled into the winter regimen… if not it’s never too late to start. The only down side is no prizes for you!! :-p lol

Here’s what I have been doing

I am using wigs as my protective style – why??? because my scalp was feeling very tender and I did not want to go through the pain of getting my hair straight enough for it to be braided. Also I had used excessive heat on my hair –blow dry and flat iron for a special occasion so I was avoiding heat at all costs

I have been oiling my scalp like crazy with JBCO and Coconut JBCO! I could go on and on about the benefits of coconut oil but that’s a whole blog in itself. Basically it absorbs well into the hair to improve moisture and it reduces breakage. Two of the challenge goals

I do the greenhouse method about 2-3 times per week. For some reason I don’t sleep as well when I have the shower cap on my head. It’s odd but I am yet to figure it out.

Moisturise and seal heavily 3 times per week. Confession I go heavy handed because at times I’m lazy and don’t want to do it 5 times per week. Or it covers up for when I forget. Lol

Quick scalp massages every time I oil my scalp so that I can work the product in. I wish I had someone to do it for me …

How my hair feels so far

MOIST (lol-inside joke) there is no doubt that my hair is heavily moisturized at the moment, but it’s not excessive. In a week or so I will be telling a different story and that’s why next week is WASHDAY!!!! So be prepared for a detailed washday update.

My ends feel very fragile. I am glad they are braided up but I still need to be very gentle when I moisturise and seal. I am way overdue for a trim! I have to stop myself from picking up scissors and trimming it myself. I’m concerned so I need to work on this.

Hair Chat

  • I will be spicing up my regimen with something new. The inversion method for a month starting 1 June 2014 !! Who will join me??!!?? I have never done it consistently so It’s time to give it a shot. Some hair friends have already committed to us doing it together so I’m excited!! nothing to lose and 1inch of hair growth to gain. (I will post details on the 1st)
  • I think I’m going natural again !! I’m on the fence and I feel myself tipping to the natural side… I’m nervous though… but the good thing is I have two more months of the challenge to decide… decisions!
  • I took out one of my braids and I had a full length shed hair that was almost 40cm!!!!!!! MBL here I come!! #motivated

Now it’s your turn ladies? How is the challenge going for you and how is your hair?? Do you challenge check in and post your comments with hash tag #winterchallengecheckin

Looking forward to hear about your progress

tHs Winter Challenge Update (for non winter followers too)

Hi LadiesThe challenge has been begun and its great to know so many of you are taking part. Please don’t forget to post your starting pics! Don’t be shy we are one big hair family One other thing I was getting a lot of feedback this weekend from some ladies who were requesting for braids/twists to be part of the challenge…

Here’s why it was excluded from the challenge: during the winter our hair tends to get dry and brittle if not given enough attention so areas like our hair line are even more susceptible to breakage…and when it comes to weak hairline braids are hair enemy number 1 ….

HOWEVERRRRRRRR …. there are some people with stronger hairlines than others, also you can put in larger braids with hair that is not heavy, and reduce manipulation of your hair while in braids drastically to reduce breakage…. so with that being said I’ll be adding medium to large braids to the tHs winter challenge… NO MICRO BRAIDS … I will also make a few changes to the regimen on the blog so be on the look out… in the meantime post your pics and hashtag #thswinterchallenge (length check pic or your most recent pic of your hair- you don’t have to show your face if you are not comfortable just let us see your hair)

For my followers who are not in winter please still adopt the regimen … Protective styling and moisture maximization are key to our hair all year long so you still benefit. Just add an extra hashtag to your pics saying #nonwinter and let’s get growing!!!~XoXoXo~

tHs Winter Challenge Details

❀❀❀ tHs Winter Hair Care Challenge ❀❀❀

Ladies 3 more days until we get to start the first tHs Winter Hair Care Challenge! (Woohoo) I don’t know about you but I am super excited at the thought of GROWING rather than BREAKING my hair this winter! It’s also great to see that so many of you will be participating in the challenge and that you are committed to taking care of your hair… it’s so much more motivating to know that we are in this together… and a little bit of friendly completion is always great 😀 YAY!!!

winter hair care tips

Now luckily for us we don’t have to deal with extreme winter temps or snow but the change in weather will still take its toll on our hair. This winter I think we should go all out for our hair, so I encourage you to not just stick to the basic guideline but be very dynamic and incorporate a number of things that you may or may not have tried …. The key is to be open to try it all out…. The worst thing that could happen is hair growth! Lol. Now here’s how the challenge will go…

                                   Challenge Guidelines:

• **tHs Winter Hair Care Challenge 1 – 1 May 2014 – 31 July 2014**

• **Winter Challenge Goals – Grow hair, retain moisture and retain length**

• **Protective style – Wig or Weave. NO BRAIDS during challenge

How to qualify to win challenge prizes

• Take starting picture or pictures (maximum 3) of your hair and post them on to the tellinghairstory facebook page with hashtag #thswinterchallenge within the first week of the challenge i.e between 1-7 May 2014

• Challenge check-in every 2 weeks – you can do this by posting a comment or picture every 2 weeks with hashtag #thswinterchallenge onto the facebook page. I will remind you when check in dates are approaching so you remain eligible 

• Post final pictures at the end of the challenge within a week of the last day i.e by 7 August 2014

• Start and end pictures submitted by challenge participants will be reviewed to determine winners of the challenge. The winners will be chosen based on the most improved hair, most length obtained\retained, most thickness, growth etc .

Prizes up for grabs include:

• 8oz Jamaican Black Castor Oil/ Strong Roots Pimento Oil

• Tropic Isle Deep Conditioner

• Free tHs hair consultation

                                                   Challenge Staple Products

Coconut JBCO*, water based moisturiser, cream moisturiser, deep conditioner, shower cap, head scarf, wide tooth comb, paddle brush.

Why coconut jbco? – one of the challenge goals is length retention and we do this by reducing breakage. Coconut oil strengthens the hair and reduces breakage so it will be my core product for the challenge. If you already have your jbco you can get a small bottle of cco on the side. You are free to use whatever variety of products work best for your hair but ensure each of the product staples is represented. JBCO is a MUST and for the rest I stick with my trusty Tropic Isle products because you can never go wrong with anything with jbco. If you would like to stock up let me know.

                                    Challenge Regimen

• Put in your protective style weave or wig without causing strain to the hair by making it too tight

• Apply JBCO to the scalp 4x week and massage in product for about 5mins- if you have someone willing to do the scalp massage for you go for it! Very soothing. Focus on hairline and scalp. Do not be heavy handed with product.

• Moisturize and seal your hair using the L.O.C method 4xweek. It’s a lot easier when you are using a wig regimen as you have more access to your hair.

• Do the greenhouse method 2-3 times a week. Make-sure you give your hair a chance to dry in the morning before styling/putting on your wig. • Full wash day every 4 weeks i.e pre-poo, wash, protein treatment, deep conditioner. All processes done in sections. I will help you out and post a detailed wash day regimen prior to each wash day highlighting what you will need to do. 

                                              Challenge Tips

• Less is more!! This winter try to manipulate your hair as little as possible. By manipulation I mean combing pulling tying etc.. that’s why protective styles are part of the challenge. You don’t want unnecessary mechanical damage to our strands so keep your hair in for at least 4weeks.

• Allow your hair to get as much hydration as possible during the challenge WATER IS YOUR FRIEND. E.g when you shower/bath there is no need for a shower cap. Let your hair absorb all the steam from the water then seal it in by applying a bit of coconut oil

• Sleep with a head scarf!! Or change your pillow case

PS: Winners of the blog will be featured as tHs Hair Story Features, as well as anyone who would like to share their results.

GOOD LUCK LADIES AND REMEMBER “HEALTHY HAIR IS FOR US ALL!!!!!! “

~XoXoXo~

Happy Hair Growing ladies!!!

Hair Chat and COGS Update

I hope you are all well. I know it’s been some time since I last posted and I ‘m really starting to have blogging withdrawals even though it’s only been a week! Any way I hope you are all doing the castor oil challenge and if not, it’s not too late. You can start now because we are only one week in.  send your starting pics to kundayimawema@gmail.com in order to be eligible to win the prizes at end ie 8oz Tropic Isle Living JBCO!!!!. As the challenge progresses I will make a follow up on the blog and with all my clients to see how you are finding the castor oil, if you have noticed any changes, if your hair is responding etc etc. and I look forward to hearing positive responses.  If you do your homework and read around on the internet you will find that T.I.L JBCO is a staple product on basically every blog! and it’s for a reason! Trust me!!! I ADORE the stuff and soon after the challenge you will too!

Now onto a bit of hair chat about something that’s been on my mind for the last few days. It stemmed from a conversation I had with a friend about hair and it made realize a few things.

  • Women feel very defeated about their hair and hair issues
  • The myths on hair are still very much alive in Zimbabwe/Africa
  • I need to put a lot more emphasis on the fact that women need to take ownership of their OWN hair and hair journey

The key step in solving the above is to READ. And I don’t mean just browsing the pages, I mean REALLY READ, or listen to someone with info. There is power in knowledge. Only when you start to understand hair will you be able to realize the mistakes you have made with your hair, identify bad hair practices, debunk the hair myths on your own and take ownership by starting a hair journey

Reading and learning about hair helps you to accept your hair the way it is. Accepting that all hair is different and learning to LOVE your hair is so important. Your hair will never be the same as mine or the next girl so quit comparing already!! Focus on YOUR HAIR and YOUR HAIR NEEDS. Reading will help you do this. Don’t wait to see pictures of someone with extremely bad hair gone good in order to believe that healthy hair practices work, just zone in on what God gave YOU and make it work.  The hair you see on my head has not just grown inches  overnight because of “good genes”. I too have hairline, dandruff issues and have had a VERY rocky hair journey, but the difference may be that I aggressively and consistently put in the work to fix these things and the results follow.

I’ve said it before that if you are looking for a quick fix you won’t find that here… the more you read the more this is verified. That’s why there is emphasis on the words HAIR JOURNEY and HAIR STORY. It’s to drill in the time factor in the hair growth process. And if you are someone with a damaged scalp or hair you can expect it take a little while longer. Years of bad hair practices are not corrected in a few days with a new product and a few scalp massages. Hair growth is all about a healthy scalp! No healthy scalp no hair growth, so find a regimen with healthy hair practices and give your hair time it will respond.

“Healthy hair is for us ALL”  as well as the confidence that comes with it! I say this all the time and I mean it. Those with the biggest hair challenges make the best hair stories … So stay encouraged ladies!
